Interesting results in junior round

18/08/2008 10:50:00 AM
AGAIN a shortened round of Shoalhaven Hockey as draws are aligned for the upcoming finals.

Some fine junior hockey was on display at the Bernie Regan Sporting Complex on Saturday.

In Junior A grade McDonalds Bluejays Navy were able to defeat City in a tight game.

City is sitting in second spot on the competition table and were surprised by the defence from the Navy outfit.

Claire Cowman was outstanding and combined well with Kirsten Thone and Nick Jennings in defence.

But the speed machines Brett Condie and Ethan Hale were able to combine well throughout the game and were rewarded with the only goal of the day when Ethan slotted the ball into the net.

Lachlan Lamont and Luke Hogan were tireless as usual, but could not counteract the improving Navy teamwork.

City’s Jami Collier scored a double in B grade match against Shoalhaven Heads, Shelley Blacker was also able to find the net for City.

Tyree Armstrong was the sole scorer for Heads.

The junior C grade games have improved throughout the season as the very energetic players practice new skills at training each week.

Alistair Harper was in incredible goal scoring form when he slotted away the only goal in the match between McDonalds Bomaderry Bluejays Navy and City.

With the win Navy now move to within one point of second placed City on the competition ladder.

While top of the table McDonalds Bomaderry Bluejays Sky were also in form with goals to Madeleine Gaffney, Alistair Harper and Tianah Wills.

Tianah’s goal was exceptional, showing she has been listening and learning at training, even if the weather is cold and the wind is blowing.

Well done to the Sky defence who were able to keep Southern Districts scoreless.

With the men’s competition in recess this week, it was time for the women to shine with four close games.

St Georges Basin hold the top of the A grade ladder, but were tested by a determined young McDonalds Bomaderry Bluejays outfit ably lead by Shelby Roberts and Rebecca Clarke.

Lucy Cowman, Mia Arnold and Kate Bellamy were tireless throughout the game trying to counteract the Basin attack of Ashleigh Crisafi.

She was able to bag a double, but was disappointed not to have scored more, as was Kayla Askew who was well marked during the game.

Emily Reichler scored the final goal for Basin to take the game 3-nil.

City women’s A and B grade were both involved in defensive games, but their determination only saw their opponents score one goal in each game.

In the A grade Hayley Bond for Heads was the only goalscorer of the game.

With Heads holding second position on the table they will need to begin preparing for the final and fine tune their goalscoring skills.

In B grade McDonalds Bomaderry Bluejays held field position throughout the game.

They were constantly camped in the City defensive quarter, but were unable to score.

Diane Lamont was back to her teen form sweeping the ball clear on any shot at goal.

Betty Strickland made one breakaway, but was blocked at the top of the circle by goalie Juanita Mackay.

The ’Jays young ladies, Kate Bryce, Caroline Leach, Claire Cowman, Lexi Mounsey, Kirsten Thone were tireless in their attempts to score a goal, but it took the injection of Colleen Connolly to ensure the ball found the back of the net after hitting both posts to score the winning goal in the final seconds of the game.

The McDonalds Bomaderry Bluejays’ win took them to the top of the competition table after they leapfrogged Allsorts who had a 1-all draw with Shoalhaven Heads.

Allsorts will meet the ’Jays next week in what is seen as the grandfinal preview.

Congratulations to Alex Mackay who was named in the NSW Bushrangers under 15 development team to compete in October in Albury.

Alex was also named vice-captain of this squad.
